Write a letter
Requirements – Always read your newspaper’s standards for length and other requirements. They will all require your full name, a mailing address and phone number so they can verify that you e-mailed or mailed them the letter that has your name on it.
Length – Keep it short, clear and concise. Stick to ONE issue. Keep your letter to three short paragraphs.
Topic – The Idaho Democrat newsletter has covered a many different topics. Use them as a guide to help frame the issue you address in your letter. Pick a topic that is currently in the news. The more timely your issue, the sooner your letter will be printed.
Contrast values – Describe your views on an issue based on your values and make a clear contrast with the way Republicans respond to the issue.
Language – Use everyday language and personalize your message with “I” or “me.” Ask someone to read and edit your letter before you send it.
Supporting candidates – if your letter includes your endorsement of a candidate, mention your candidates name three times (the more readers see the name, the more they’ll remember it.) ALWAYS end your letter by urging readers to vote for the candidate. Most newspapers have deadlines for letters that endorse candidates so make sure what they are. Do not give your candidate’s opponent more visibility, so when you make a contrast, don’t mention them by name.
Submitting – Every newspaper allows you to submit letters by e-mail or by US mail but most prefer e-mail.
Frequency – Become a regular! Most newspapers have will print a second letter a month or two after your last letter. Plan to send them regularly so you can help shape the public discussion on issues you care about!
Verify – Call the newspaper after you send your letter to make sure they received it and ask when they might print the letter.
Send us a link – when your letter is printed, send us a link and we’ll try to share it with other Democrats to encourage them to follow your example!
YOUR letter will make a difference in changing the way people talk about
